I’m making my way through the home library. First time reading a Lee Child book and this is the first one from the Reacher series.
Knew it would be mystery and action. Did not expect the graphic descriptions of violence and sometimes I’d regret reading it at night before bed for that reason.
Pros:
The story will get you hooked.
There are lots of hints on what’s happening but it’s not obvious and that’s what makes you keep turning the page even when you’re having trouble keeping your eyes open.
Cons:
I find the main character Reacher’s style of talking pretty annoying. A lot of telling instead of showing. A lot of literal narration and over explaining of how people are, how they think, how they behave.
The phrase, ‘a hell of a …’ is so overused, about 30+ times, that it starts to sound silly. Everything is ‘a hell of an evening, day, week, year, trip, sight, problem, mess, noise’ and on and on.
*Main character quirk*
The only clothes Reacher owns are the ones he’s wearing. With all that action happening and no showering, that’s one pungent protagonist.
*Great first line and first page*
